As a returning student I thought it might be enlightening to review what I've learned during the last three semesters of Academia. An Institution of higher learning. An Art Studio major in a State funded University. (In many states, "State School" is used in the same manner as "State Hospital" to denote an institution for the mentally retarded).> Wikipedia® ]
As the old man once said, "I'm short on time, put it on a bumper sticker".
Here goes, part one:
I have learned;
Some classmates do not smell so swell.
There is academic art, museum art and art galleries.
Two kinds of aesthetics, theoretical aesthetics and visual aesthetics.
Liberals are not as liberal as one might think.
Liberals are louder than conservatives.
Art History is really interesting considering the tools and material they had to work with.
Modern ART history is sorta interesting. Some where along the line the most outrageous was in vogue.
There is NO code of Ethics for Artists. Doctors have a code of ethics, Lawyers have a code of ethics. Why?
There is the mastery of ones tools and media. And there is off the wall, out of no where creativity that can take your breath away.
The professors lectures and the book readings may differ.
Studio classes are to DAMN LOOOOONG!
Who knew I would like American Literature and poetry.
Creativity and madness? Media romanticize the idea of artistic inspiration. Somehow wackiness and creativity among artists, creative types, writers, and musicians go hand in hand. Not really that way. Talent, persistence and luck does it more often than not.
